We have posted before about curcumin and the possible benefits to our eyes.
A recent study at the Department of Cardiology, Union Hospital, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China has looked at curcumin for autoimmune diseases.
The findings are that curcumin, the principal active component of turmeric, can serve as a therapeutic agent for autoimmune diseases. The findings relate particularly to rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, but show that curcumin can inhibit proliferation and cytokine secretion of T cells (the ones in our immune system that are presumed to cause us our problem).
More good news for those of us who react so poorly to our systemic medication regimes. It seems as though we, the patients, who are asking for less toxic treatments, are finally being heard!
Lets hope that some-one undertakes further research on curcumin. In the meantime, we know that a number of our members take curcumin as a supplement. If you do, please remember to check with your consultant, as even supplements can have inter-actions with our medications. Better to be safe than sorry.
