Worms, Yet Again!

There has been an overwhelming number of papers being produced on helminthic therapy (worms) recently.  This is exciting, as it means that it is a therapy that is being taken seriously, and therefore may well get to trial quite soon.

This post is about Coronado Biosciences who are using helminthic therapy in a trial on type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune disease), having had success using it on Crohn’s Disease (an autoimmune disease).

The drug is administered through a solution, so is easy to take, and the worm eggs are microscopic, so you can’t see them, taste them or smell them.

The worms help to reset the balance in your body, so your immune system starts attacking what it is supposed to attack – outside bacteria, rather than cells in your body.

For those of you who are squeamish, the worms can only stay alive in us for about two weeks, so you are not left permanently carrying around worms in your stomach!
