The Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences has published a paper on Mesenchymal stem Cells (MSCs). The Institute believes that MSCs are emerging as a promising therapeutic approach of a cell-based therapy for a wide range of auto-immune disorders and degenerative diseases. They say that, in preclinical and clinical studies, MSCs have been highly efficient in treating lupus, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes (these are all auto-immune diseases). Somehow, the stem cells seem to have an immunomodulatory effect.
This is an exciting development, as we are always looking for less toxic approaches to our own autoimmune disease.
